training music

The music being played in the box is a constant topic of discussion, catalyst for fights, and source of amusement when MJ comes on and Chauncey flips his lid. I have heard just about every damn thing possible at the gym. I have heard more Black Eyed Peas than I would care to admit, but I've also heard some funky circus music, country, metal, rock, reggae, hip hop, whatever Barry Manilow is (adult contemporary?), and everything in between. I think there are as many opinions about "good" training music as there are genres of music. I am going to present you suckas with what kind of music I like, and why. Buckle in and and get ready to disagree.

(actual picture of Chauncey the last time The Jackson 5's "ABC" came on)

Training music is not as simple as "blast AC/DC bitches!"...at least for me. I want different things playing when I'm lifting heavy than I do when I'm fumbling through a metcon. I like certain songs when I'm warming up, when I'm cooling down, whatever. I'm weird. At the same time, I should note I rarely hear the music during an actual workout. Once the clock starts or the lift begins, anything in the world could be playing and I wouldn't care. I just prefer the music to get me in a proper state of mind. Sometimes it does help bail me out of a meltdown, but I try to avoid those times.

First, for metcons, I like relatively calm music. WHAT?! Heresy!! As much as I like Disturbed, it makes me feel like crashing through walls and punching children. If I am going to have a good metcon, I am already pumped up and ready to go, so I want music that will help calm me down if I start to freak out because I can't breath and there's a hundred pounds crashing on me. Sometimes I like Rage Against the Machine or something to get me ready for a metcon, but usually that means I don't want to do the metcon in the first place, so that's a whole other problem. My current favorite metcon song is kind of embarrassing. It came on Pandora one day during one of my metcons and I totally dug it. Later I found out it was by Limp Bizkit. Sigh.... anyway, here is that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEGI9NbH-mk . Don't ask me to explain it, it just works for me. I don't even listen to the lyrics. Here is another favorite metcon song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS4OAK-v6Zg . I'm less embarrassed about that song, but most people wouldn't dig it for Fran.

For heavy lifting, I like things like U2's "Numb" . For some reason I also like STP's "Loungfly". Why? It played one time when I PR'd my snatch, so now I like it. I think Reggae is legit lifting music too. If you disagree, you're wrong. A decent amount of good hip-hop belongs in there too.

As you can tell, I like pretty random music for training. I want anyone and everyone to post some favorite songs in the comments and I'll start collecting them onto a playlist that we can have at the gym. I doubt everyone will like every song, but I also doubt that I care. Nominate songs and we'll play them! Probably.

  1. "waiting for thrasher to nominate lady gaga" I just sprayed out my kombucha!

I vote more eminem and reggaeton! actually anything is fine, when I'm deep in a workout I hardly hear it at all.

  2. Ohhh, a music post... I want to talk about this forever. Instead I will say I pretty much agree with you up there, and then burn you some cds, including one song that can automatically put everyone in the entire world in a great mood. Seriously. (I started to make a list and it got ridiculous in a hurry).

Also, you can always have more U2, STP, Pearl Jam, & Soundgarden.

  3. I'm on it summer. Through a weird mishap with illegal downloading (what? who?) I have the entire Eminem discography. It's sizable.

Cassie, that sounds like I'm gonna get a mixtape! Yessss.

  4. I vote for Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. Any chance of that ever happening in the gym?

  5. HAHAHAHA! MJ with my kettlebells gives me turrets!! Just can't WOD to that.

I like all yours and Cassies's recommendations. I also loved Jenny's mix you had on one day as well as Elizabeths's.

Linkin Park gets me working like a madman- STP, Pearl Jam, etc. but my all time fav is AC/DC...!! Many requests for that.

Maybe throw in Eye of the Tiger and Lunatic Fringe somewhere in the middle of thangs for some old school representation so I can laugh on the outside while I'm crying on the inside during the WOD.

  6. I realize classical musicians can't keep a beat(actually, each hand and each foot can tap out different times... they're amazing rhythmically) but I am wondering what if any effect Mozart or Beethoven might offer during strenuous exercise. My kids have tried to convince me that my musical tastes suck, and so I won't suggest Kingston Trio or Dave Clark Five tunes, but I do recommend some MoTown, then techno, with a little Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for variety. No? Okay, how 'bout Harry Belafonte? No? Okay, then Tibetan chant. Sample this and picture all the PRs happening:

  9. Whoa Mary, I think you're going to like my mixes a whole bunch! Nice list.

  10. Davey- I feel like I can tell you this since you are my brother... that Limp Bizkit song
1.) initiated my gag reflex and
    2.) made my ears bleed.
Hopefully you aren't controlling music next time we are working out together.

    ReplyDelete
  11. does movie soundtrack music not factor into this particular situation?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Holy hell Mary. Did you take the time to write all those out? I'm impressed, either way. I'll get to it.

Emily - you're lucky you're stronger than me.

Ebeth - I don't see why not. I haven't found any I like to train to...

    Steve - uh...I'm on it!

Marnee - looks like Steve is up for it. Maybe you guys need a special class together.

  13. Marnee, Ode to Joy from the immortal 9th! Are you with me!?!?! Crank it and I'll lift a truck.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes. I did. I'm really bored and at the homestretch so doing work just seems silly.

And if we're going to roll in some soundtrack action, the natural choice is Rocky I-IV.

  15. The music that would work for me is anything that all the people who complain actually bring in and put on. So easily pleased. That is why I love everything on Kate's ipod. Because Kate made playlists, uploaded and brought it in.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's a cop out answer Jen! It's not just what plays in the gym but what kind of music do you personally like to hear. What would you listen to alone in your garage while doing Fran or snatching for a PR?? You can admit it, it's Yanni.

  18. I am gonna have to vote this as your best blog post to-date. Not that I am saying this is the best of "crap"...quite the contrary. Your masterful literary compositions topped with a visual splash of make-you-feel-good animal antics always are memorable. Dave, if it pains you to even see the name "Limp Bizkit" on your ipod, you could always opt for the version by The Who...a slightly lesser known band before your day, you young whippersnapper. And props to Dr. Stephe recommendation (I opt for this version over the more commonly used "Steve")...I would be happy to blast "Eternal Om", an ear-pounding, heart-racing 58 minute compilation of nothing but "Om" being chanted by the Tibetan monks. In fact, I have it downloaded back-to-back...Did I just hear 1 hr, 56 minutes of PR's? With two young girls (6 & 8) in my home, anything BESIDES Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrrus, or the High School Musical soundtrack is motivating to me. But I must admit, I have a deep passion for the various Vince DiCola compilations from the Rocky soundtracks, i.e. The Training Montage, and War, especially when working up to max weights. Makes me feel like I am hoisting a massive cart in a Siberian farmhouse, or going the distance with Apollo Creed, or the big Russian, Ivan Drago. Although, I wouldn't mind some NWA, or Ice Cube either, plus it would make me wanna bust a cap in yo' ass, Dave.

  19. Dave if you want music that makes you want to smash through walls and hit children I can bring some hatebreed in. I would suggest some more rob zombie, breaking benjamin, chevelle, taproot, seether, atreyu, avenged sevenfold, stonesour.. some shinedown.. bullet for my valentine.

i know this is off topic but I have a workout suggestion. 10 reps of each at 65lbs.
deadlift, hang clean, front squat, push press, back squat. 5 rounds with rest after each round. but the rest time is the time it takes you to complete each round. so those that want to slack will get a slower time due to the longer break.
